A CASA DA CRUZ
A Casa da Cruz is a multidisciplinary project that investigates the construction of female identity under Francoism through the life of Josefina Pazos Somoza, my grandmother. Her story encompasses the Civil War, the postwar period, migration, marriage, motherhood and the forms of femininity learned within a society deeply shaped by National Catholic morality. Drawing on her family archive and research into the discourses and mechanisms that defined the Francoist model of womanhood, the project brings an individual experience into relation with the historical structures that shaped her life.
Photography reconstructs and situates Josefina’s life from my own perspective, using family photographs, letters, documents, objects and spaces as fragments through which to read what has been passed down from one generation to the next. The video introduces another position: Josefina appears in her own voice, deciding what to tell and how to tell it. This difference establishes a relationship between two ways of approaching the same life: the gaze of the one who receives and the voice of the one who shares. The project is completed by a conversation between two generations of women, asking what we inherit from those who came before us and what we choose to do with it, understanding legacy as something passed on that we must take responsibility for in the present.
